If your teeth hurt, your mind will probably automatically rifle through some of the common causes – a cavity, tooth sensitivity, or trauma. While these issues certainly make up a bulk of the issues, they aren't the only possible culprits. These are some of the less common reasons that your teeth might hurt.
If your teeth are bothering you and it is around flu season, your sinuses could be to blame. The sinus floor sits on top of the roof of your mouth, so when they are inflamed, you might feel pain in your teeth. A common way to tell if the sinuses are the culprit is if the pain is widespread. If your sinuses are to blame, several teeth will hurt rather than just one.
An abscess is fairly uncommon, and it involves a tooth infection within a pocket filled with debris or food. Other signs of an abscess include severe pain, inflammation, pus, and swelling. The sooner that you have your abscess treated, the better your outcome will be.
The temporomandibular joint connects the side of the head and jaw, and it allows you to talk, chew, and yawn. A disorder of this joint can lead to jaw pain that feels similar to a toothache. Another major sign of TMJ disorder is hearing a pop or clicking sound when you try to open your mouth.
Some people clench and grind their teeth while asleep. You might not even realize you're doing it, but painful teeth with worn surfaces are a sign. Other symptoms include facial pain, headaches, and a stiff jaw.
Regardless of the reason, if your teeth hurt, you need to have them evaluated. Give our office a call today to set up your next appointment. We'll determine exactly what's wrong and how we can help.
