|As kids get ready to go to bed, parents remind them to take their vitamins. Parents know that vitamins are an important part of good health, but that does not mean they know what vitamins actually do for the body.
Different vitamins affect different areas in the body. When it comes to the teeth, one vitamin that helps keep them healthy is vitamin D. It offers many benefits to oral health that are worth learning about.
What Does Vitamin D Offer?
When it comes to oral health, two of the biggest problems to deal with are tooth decay and bleeding gums. Vitamin D can help build stronger bones and it helps the body absorb calcium. Calcium can help create the bony structure that makes up tooth enamel. The enamel layer of the teeth protects it from the bacteria and plaque that cause tooth decay.
In the dentin of the teeth are guardian cells. These cells can repair any damage in the dentin, but they only work if there is vitamin D present. It can reverse the damage of tooth decay with the help of the vitamin D.
Bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease or an infection in the gums. They can result from a weakened immune system. If the immune system is not strong enough to fight eh bacteria that leads to the infections, the infections will spread. Vitamin D is a powerful immune system booster.
Keeping Your Levels of Vitamin D
When there is a vitamin D deficiency, the teeth and gums are at a higher risk for problems. The solution is to make sure that your body gets enough vitamin D. That is done through diet and if needed supplements.
There are also things that can deplete the levels of vitamin D. Not enough sunlight and issues with your digestive, immune or liver can impact the way the body processes vitamin D and can lead to lower levels. Make sure you get at least 30 minutes in the sun daily to keep your levels of vitamin D high.
There are many vitamins and minerals that contribute to your overall health. Make sure you get what your body needs every day for the best oral health possible.
