![]() The Purposes of a Dental CrownDental crowns help replace natural teeth that have broken or have been lost. The crowns can fit over a broken tooth or they can attach to an implant to replace a missing tooth. People think that the crown is important for their appearance, but it also helps maintain the health of their remaining teeth and gums. The crown supports the surrounding teeth in the way that the natural tooth would. It also helps prevent bone loss. A dental crown requires the same type of care as a natural tooth. It also faces many of the same dangers as a natural tooth. You can break a crown through trauma or by biting down on something hard. Repairing the Broken CrownIf you break a crown it is important to take a few steps right away. You should try to preserve any of the pieces that broke off. If the break has left jagged edges or may cause soreness in the gums that require immediate help. If you don't need immediate help, you should head to our office within a few days to repair the broken crown. Repairing the crown depends on the severity of the problem. For small chips it is often possible to smooth the crown and leave it in place. It is possible to secure a crown that has become loose. For more sever breaks, cracks or chips, replacing the crown is often the best option. For more information about this or any other oral health issue, contact our office to schedule an appointment. |
