Some with Gum Disease Are Noticing an Increase in Breathing Issues

Some with Gum Disease Are Noticing an Increase in Breathing IssuesIf you are an athlete or just enjoy any activity that pushes your cardiovascular system, you'll be interested to know that studies are showing maintaining good oral health may contribute to having a healthy respiratory system.

A study was conducted with 200 people ages 20 to 60 possessing at least 20 natural teeth. Half of them were patients with serious breathing issues like pneumonia, COPD, and Bronchitis. The other half were healthy people with no problems with the respiratory system.

Correlation of gum disease and cardiovascular system

The study concluded, finding patients who had respiratory diseases had worse periodontal health than the healthy group. After some research, we suspect that having oral diseases can increase the risk of developing respiratory disease. They recommend getting with a dental facility like ourselves to prevent the progression of any harmful oral disease. By doing this, you reduce the risk of pneumonia and COPD. The study gives us another example of how oral care can play a key role in the rest of our body.

Dental Health and Lung Disease

Another study by the American Thoracic Society showed the link between oral health and lunch disease. Your teeth and gums are a tool for germs that can travel down to the lungs and harm them. Harmful bacteria live in dental plaque, a film that forms on the teeth, and bacteria grow at an alarming rate. Some bacteria can be inhaled into the lungs by tiny droplets of saliva.

A healthy lung can fight off the bacteria. Diseased lungs are not as equipped to deal with the constant invasion of bacteria. As bacteria continue to cause inflammation in the airways, it is one factor that leads to more frequent symptoms and lung damage.

Infected and inflamed gums send out a “distress message” that puts the entire body on alert. This can lead to more inflammation in the lungs. In closing, if you are experiencing oral health issues, don't wait for it to work itself out. Our office is available to address your oral care.
