Fillings are needed to fill cavities in the teeth. Crowns cover the tops of ruined teeth. Sometimes, fillings or crowns fall out. In some instances, a filling or crown may become loose because there is decay underneath it.
Suddenly losing a filling or crown is an unnerving condition for most people. Not only is it an odd feeling to be losing part of your tooth, but there can also be tooth sensitivity and a good deal of suffering now that the tooth is exposed. Whether it takes place when you are eating, flossing or brushing your teeth, it does happen. Here is what to do next.
What to Do First If You Have Lost a Filling or Crown
First, don't swallow the filling on accident, nor inhale it. Most fillings will pass without a problem. The next step is to call our office immediately to get booked for an appointment to have the filling replaced. A lost filling or crown is rarely an emergency. However, it can be painful because the sensitive tooth tissue is often responsive to temperature, pressure or air. If you lose a crown, put it in a secure place and bring it to your appointment.
What to Do Until Your Appointment with Us
Your main concern until your visit with us is to protect the tooth. If you have lost a crown or filling and have it intact, you may be able to slip it back in/over the tooth. First, clean the interior of the crown/filling and then glue it with dental cement. Dental cement found at most drug stores. It can also be used to simply coat the exposed area of the tooth and protect it if the filling won't go back. Keep the area clean until your appointment.
There is no reason why we can't treat the tooth to another filling if you have been careful. There are cases where it's tooth decay under the filling that led it to fall out. Once we treat the decay we can then apply another filling or a crown. If you have a loose filling or crown currently, call us today. We can get you scheduled and fixed up before it falls out.
Beautifully written and very informative
