You may not have heard of the term “ptyalism.†However, a lot of pregnant women face its symptoms. Although the term is sounds rather strange, it refers to the production of excessive saliva. Although the condition can occur in anyone, it is not uncommon in pregnant women who usually experience it during their first trimester.
What is Hypersalivation?
Ptyalism means producing more saliva than usual. When too much saliva accumulates in the mouth, it may cause drooling. In both children and adult, drooling is sometimes a sign of an underlying condition. Hypersalivation may be temporary or chronic but it depends on the cause. If you have an oral infection, your salivary gland may produce more saliva to flush out the infection. Once the infection is successfully treated, hypersalivation will stop. Constant hypersalivation is caused by an underlying condition that affects motor control. This can include mental retardation or cerebral palsy in children and Parkinson's disease in adults.
Ptyalism and Pregnancy
In pregnant women, ptyalism mostly occurs in women who suffer from extreme morning sickness. Although its cause remains uncertain, changing hormones are suspected to play a part in it. Additionally, women who are nauseous may try to avoid swallowing less, which can cause a buildup of saliva in the mouth. Vomiting can also prompt the salivary glands to produce more saliva to coat the mouth and esophagus and reduce burn and irritation which occurs with vomiting.
