Defining Acute Oral Pain

Posted on 7/23/2020 by Dr. J. Derek Tieken
Defining Acute Oral PainSeveral tooth problems can bring about toothache, but some can trigger acute pain that requires the urgent attention of our medical experts. Not only do we have the means for diagnosing the cause of acute oral pain, but we also use state-of-the-art methodologies for applying the best treatment regimen. We'll consider the history of your dental health, and use radiographs to further investigate the type and causes of your acute pain. In many instances, our patients often turn up feeling sharp shooting or throbbing oral pains that result from inflammation in the gum, gum infections like gingivitis, food impaction, among a lot of other causes. Here's a brief overview of what's generally considered as acute oral pain.

What Qualifies as An Acute Oral Pain?

Symptoms of acute oral pain can manifest as short, sharp, shooting pain that may result from fractured teeth, split cusp, inflammation in the gums, etc. Short bursts of sharp pain can also result from conditions like gingival recession, sensitivity, trigeminal neuralgia, etc.

The pain can also manifest as dull and throbbing, pain that doesn't just come and go but lingers with persistence. This type is usually caused by food impaction, pericoronitis, acute necrotizing, or maxillary sinusitis.

How Best to Handle Oral Tooth Pain

You don't have to bother about familiarizing yourself with all the above causes and symptoms of acute oral pain on your own. Our dentists will help make sense of it all once you report the common symptoms at our offices.

When you report your acute oral pain, we'll immediately proceed with a diagnosis to establish the root cause of the pain. Once we identify the site of the pain, we'll proceed to carefully rid it of any buildup of plaque, tartar or even pus. If you're sensitive to pain, we'll apply some anesthesia first.

If you're suffering from dry socket, we'll discuss your dental history and lifestyle changes that might affect your chances of successfully treating your pain. Call us today if you or your loved ones are currently grappling with symptoms of acute dental pain.
