How Much Does Flossing Actually Do for Your Mouth?

Even though the overwhelming consensus within the dental and medical communities is that flossing plays a tremendous role in improving oral health, many people simply do not practice it. Perhaps it is because they don't really know how to do it properly. Maybe they just weren't raised up doing it and the habit isn't easy to form. Or in some cases, it may just be laziness. Regardless of the reasons, flossing is a critical part of dental care. Here is just a small example of how it helps:
Increases Gum Strength
Removing the various food particles and debris that get stuck between our teeth not only helps our breath and offers many other benefits, it can also increase gum strength. Continued inflammation and the development of periodontal issues is what zaps the strength and integrity away from the gums in the first place, leading to instability in the teeth. Establishing and sticking to a healthy flossing routine early can lead to much stronger gums over a lifetime.
Reduces Inflammation and Deters Gingivitis
Inflammation and swelling are the very early stages of those periodontal issues that we just mentioned. Gingivitis is the next step up and it is the last stage where the damage is still reversible. Regular flossing after meals and before bed with the proper type of dental floss for you can help prevent you from ever developing those conditions in the first place.
As far as the right type of floss goes, people who have gaps or separation in their teeth usually do best with wide, flat strips. For those with a tighter tooth structure, a thin piece of floss is probably better.
