Understanding When Oral Surgery and Orthodontics May Overlap
Posted on 8/10/2020 by Dr. J. Derek Tieken
There are several situations when oral surgery and orthodontics will overlap. This could include an accident, a jaw fracture, or a broken tooth.
Transitioning From Jaw Surgery To Orthodontics
When there are dental surgery and orthodontics involved, dental surgery is usually performed first and the patient is then given a few days to recover from the surgery after which the orthodontist will start working toward restoring their smile.
Many patients would love for the orthodontist and the dental surgeon to work together. However, this is not ideal because dental surgery can be invasive and it can leave your mouth and gums sore for a couple of days after the procedure. Some wounds also need to heal completely. When an orthodontist goes in without allowing the mouth to recover, this could create more complications in the long run.
Fitting an orthodontic on inflamed gums not only increases the risk of an infection, but it can also result in ill-fitted orthodontics that would need to be taken off as soon as the inflammation goes down. What you may believe to be a time-saving procedure will actually take up more of your time and you will have to go through multiple painful procedures just to fix a botched up orthodontic fitting.
As dentists, we are used to working alongside both of these professionals. Should you need any type of a procedure where they would be working together, we would also be involved in coordinating your care since you are our patient. If you ever have any questions, please contact us. We will always take the time to listen and explain what is going on so you feel more at ease. While these types of scenarios may be rare, they are not unheard of, so we always do what we can to manage your oral health as the process goes along.
Beautifully written and very informative
