The Oral Health Dangers of Toothpicks

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Dr. J. Derek Tieken
The Oral Health Dangers of ToothpicksSticking food between your teeth can be annoying and embarrassing, especially in a public space. While restaurants may provide a toothpick for you to use in such a case, using it may not be a good idea. Experts consider toothpicks a historical tool rather than an interdental cleaner when it comes to your oral health. This is because of their potential risks and interdental ineffectiveness. Among the oral health dangers of toothpicks include gum, tooth, and teeth restoration damages.

Gum and Tooth Damage

When using a toothpick, it can break and get lodged in your gum tissue. This wound will then act as a loophole for bacteria to enter and cause infection. Toothpicks can also damage your tooth enamel and roots if used roughly. Despite the enamel being the hardest component on the body, it is vulnerable to damage, and habitual chewing of toothpicks will weaken and damage your teeth. Some toothpicks are also made of hard plastic, which is unfriendly to your teeth. Exposed tooth roots are painful to touch and can also damage upon contact with a toothpick.

Damage to Teeth Restorations

If you have teeth restorations such as veneers and crowns, careless picking can damage them. If you slide your toothpick between your restoration and teeth, you may knock out your crown or veneer altogether. Given the above dangers of a toothpick, it is important to explore safer options such as flossing to remove food particles between your teeth. Unlike toothpicks, dental floss will remove both plaque and food particles, preventing cavities and gum disease. You can also use interdental brushes with small, bristled heads that easily fit between your teeth surfaces. Routine brushing with fluoride toothpaste coupled with regular dental cleanings is also necessary to keep your mouth clean and healthy.
