J. Derek Tieken, DDS
Dr. J. Derek Tieken has earned lots of accolades and honors in his more than 32 years as a dentist, and before that, while earning his degree from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston. President of his fourth-year class, Dr. Tieken delivered the commencement address.
His dental practice, Tieken Smiles Dentistry, has been recognized as a “Best Dentist” by Bay Area Houston Magazine for 18 years in a row. It also earned a spot on H-Texas Magazine’s “Top Dentists” list from 2010 to 2016. In 2014, Tieken Smiles Dentistry was selected as Practice of the Year by Next Level, a dental consulting and training organization. Dr. Tieken has also received the following honors:
- Named a Texas Super Dentist in 2019 and 2020 by Texas Monthly
- Named Top Dentist in 2019, 2020 and 2021 in Houstonia magazine.
- Awarded the 2019 Smile Source Practice of Excellence Award
- Awarded the 2021 Texas Top 10% in General Dentistry
- Appeared on Consumers’ Research Council of America’s list of top dentists in the U.S.
- Listed in the Texas Top 10% in General Dentistry in 2021
- Voted in the Top 3 best cosmetic dentists in all of Houston by the Houston Chronicle in 2023
Focus On Patient Well-Being
But there is more to dentistry than awards. Dr. Tieken has always had a passion for dentistry and knew he wanted to practice at a young age. He continues to be fascinated by the connection between a healthy mouth and a healthy body. This shows in his work, through his focus on improving his patients’ overall well-being. He takes time to build close relationships with his patients and provide each and every one of them with personalized care.
Dr. Tieken enjoys continuing to grow in his dental profession and staying on the cutting edge of dental technology. He stays up to date on the latest dental trends by taking courses at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.
Giving Back to The Community
Dr. Tieken is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the International Academy of Sleep. He is a longtime participant in its Give Back a Smile program, which provides restorative dentistry services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Dr. Tieken loves his local community. He established his dental practice just 10 miles away from where he grew up, and he participates in many community service projects such as providing dental screenings to the local area school children.
In His Free Time
In his free time, Dr. Tieken enjoys traveling with his wife, Lori, reading and writing, being outdoors, and boating. He also enjoys following sports, especially his alma mater Baylor University and The University of Mississippi, where his daughter attends.
